B-17 Results – April 2009

The financial results of our B-17 tour stop in April are in. Chapter 40 is proud to report that we have received approximately $1700 in income from sell- ing rides and merchandise!

Through no fault of our chapter’s efforts, the amount was somewhat less than what we had earned in previous B-17 visits. A truly great job was done by all our volunteers, especially our chapter’s B-17 Event Chairman Wayne Salleng. Wayne inherited a B-17 event that was scheduled immediately after April 15 tax time, in a bad economy, and we were strongly handicapped by a competing B-17 tour that came through Los Angeles a month before the EAA’s B-17 did. It is to Wayne’s credit that the Van Nuys tour stop was profitable for the chapter in spite of those setbacks.

The 2009 event went off perfectly from a logistical and operational point of view. Wayne’s father Lenny Salleng, a B-17 combat crewman, was looking down from the clouds with great pride that his son was playing such an important part in keep- ing the B-17’s legacy and the legacy of that “Greatest Generation” alive and well.
